BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Community Food Bank of Central Alabama (CFB) made significant strides in combating hunger in 2024, providing over 20.5 million meals to those in need. Despite this achievement, the organization acknowledges that more work is needed, as Feeding America reports that 44 million meals are required to close the meal gap in the area.
The CFB distributed 24.6 million pounds of food across its 12-county service area, maintaining its commitment to offering fresh produce, protein, and shelf-stable items to neighbors facing hunger. In collaboration with retail partners, nearly 13 million pounds of food were reclaimed, ensuring access to nutritious options for central Alabama residents.
“Families across central Alabama continue to face an increase in prices for their bills, gas, and other basic necessities. It’s no different for their grocery budget,” said Nicole Williams, Chief Executive Officer of the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama. “Our work is centered around families not having to make a choice between paying for necessities or putting food on their tables. We will continue our efforts to end hunger in central Alabama in 2025.”
In 2024, the CFB’s mission was supported by 9,239 volunteers who contributed 18,924 hours to pack food boxes and sort items. The organization encourages community involvement through volunteering, food drives, and donations. More information is available on their website at www.feedingal.org.
