In an effort to support some of its most vulnerable families, Renaissance Academy is hosting a canned food drive on Saturday, Feb. 23.
Items collected from the food drive will help stock the shelves of the new Choice Pantry that will be managed by local nonprofit Tallahassee Life Source. The pantry will be located at 1317 High Road, adjacent to the Truth Gatherers Dream Center Church. Until the pantry is completed, the nonprofit will host regular food drives for those in need.
“Unlike traditional food distribution centers, a choice pantry allows families to select the foods they need, creating a respectable and empowering experience like grocery shopping,” Sheri Ezekiel said in a news release. Ezekiel is a resource teacher and tutoring coordinator at Renaissance Academy.
Last year, the non-profit and the school hosted the Thanksgiving Packing Party, where students and staff provided food to 150 families in need. The school is hoping to further engage with the community at the drive by offering a sweet challenge: Anyone who donates four cans of food at the Saturday drive will receive a free “tadpole” mini-sized treat from Jeremiah’s Italian Ice.
Although the official drive is on Saturday, the school will be accepting donations in its front office all week and the Jeremiah’s incentive will still be up for grabs.
