Gaylord, St. Mary basketball sweep their biggest rivals

GAYLORD ― As the winter weather rages on in Northern Michigan, the winter high school sports season is beginning to come to an end.

MHSAA wrestling playoffs are underway, with the team and individual state finals coming up in the next couple of weeks. Meanwhile, hockey, basketball and skiing will join the wrestlers soon as the second high school sports season begins to wind down.

Gaylord area teams were in action all week despite the cold and snow making travel difficult. Here are the results you may have missed:

Jacobson scores career-high in rivalry win

Gaylord St. Mary won its second game of the season against their rivals from Johannesburg-Lewiston on Thursday, Feb. 13 thanks to a career-high 42-point performance from senior Daniel Jacobson.

Gaylord St. Mary completed the two-game, regular-season sweep of their rival from JoBurg on Thursday, using a career-high performance from senior Daniel Jacobson to win 64-36.

Jacobson scored 42 points and hit seven 3-pointers, six in the second half as GSM turned a close halftime lead into a double-digit victory. Nathan O’Connell had 12 points of his own while JoBurg was led by Drake Fulton’s 10-point performance.

GSM (12-5, 11-4 SVC) is set to wrap up the regular season with Inland Lakes, Forest Area and Pellston while JoBurg (1-18, 1-15) plays Forest Area and Inland Lakes. The Snowbirds will play in the Bellaire-hosted Division 4 district while JoBurg is set to host its own D3 district.

Gaylord upends Petoskey again, earns rare season-sweep of Northmen

Over the past twenty years or so, the Gaylord vs. Petoskey basketball rivalry has been rather one-sided. Now, the Blue Devils are fighting back.

Gaylord upended the Northmen yet again on Friday, earning their third-straight win over Petoskey and a rare regular-season sweep of their rivals with a 65-57 victory on Valentine’s Day.

Connor Fake led Gaylord with 17 points, Grayson Glazier scored 14 points and Collin Piehl had 13. Petoskey’s Hayden Janes led all scorers with 18 points.

GHS has games left against Sault Ste Marie and Bay City John Glenn before districts start on Monday, Feb. 24.

Gaylord hockey wraps rocky regular season

Gaylord wrapped its regular season this past weekend with games against Negaunee and Painesdale Jeffers.

The regular season has concluded for the Gaylord hockey team.

GHS has gone through injuries, illnesses and everything in between during a rocky season, finishing with a 9-1 loss to Painesdale Jeffers and a 10-4 loss to Negaunee over the weekend.

Eric Olsen and Grady Smith both had one goal and one assist against Negaunee while Ben Ormsbee scored GHS’s goal against Jeffers.

With the regular season wrapped up, the Blue Devils now turn their attention to the MHSAA districts as they are set to take on Cheboygan on Wednesday.

Abraham, Robel qualify for state skiing

Gaylord is sending two skiers to the MHSAA D2 state finals on Monday, Feb. 24, at Boyne Highlands: Keaton Abraham and Rayna Robel qualified Monday at the regional meet at Boyne Mountain.

Robel finished third in the slalom with a combined time of 1 minute, 19.12 seconds and fifth in the giant slalom with a time of 1:20.52. Abraham finished fifth in the girls giant slalom with a time of 1:13.71 and fourth in the slalom (1:05.33).
