New app helps Charleston businesses cut food waste with surplus sales

Restaurants and businesses in the Lowcountry now have a new tool to combat food waste with the introduction of the app Too Good To Go in the Charleston area.

“Too Good To Go is the world’s largest marketplace for selling surplus food,” said spokesperson Sarah Soteroff. The app, which originated in Denmark, has reportedly saved millions of meals worldwide from being wasted.

“Our goal is to help those businesses reduce the impact of food waste on the environment. Because if it’s getting consumed, it’s not going into a landfill,” Soteroff said.

Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit, located in downtown Charleston, is among the local businesses participating in the initiative. Founder Carrie Morey explained the challenge of managing surplus at the popular biscuit shop on King Street.

“We try to have every flavor available. So, there are times where we do have waste, and we don’t like to have waste,” Morey said.

The shop initially sold its leftovers independently but has now expanded its efforts through the app. “But it’s so great to have learned about Too Good To Go because what they’re really in essence doing is partnering with local restaurants to help, and not just restaurants, businesses, to help with food waste,” Morey said.

The app allows businesses to sell bags of leftover goods at a discounted rate, sometimes as low as one-third of the original price. According to Morey, the partnership has been beneficial.

“We are like two days into it, and you know we’re working out some kinks but it’s been really great, and the community is responding. And every day we’ve sold all of our bags. And that’s been fun,” Morey said.
