Some kids in the Scranton area will have something to smile about today…they’re getting their teeth cleaned for free!
SCRANTON, Pa. — Preparations are underway for the American Dental Association’s “Give Kids a Smile” event. The yearly event is held at Fortis Institute in Scranton, as a way to provide free dental care to children in the Scranton area.
“Anybody under the age of 18 is able to come in. The services are free for the Give Kids a Smile event. There does need to be a parent or legal guardian here with the child,” Instructor Karen DeGroat said.
Children will get cleanings, x-rays, and exams, courtesy of the dental hygiene students at Fortis Institute.
“The dental hygiene students will be providing the services and the faculty will be here to critique their work,” DeGroat said.
It’s a way for families to get dental care for free, and students benefit from the hands-on training before they graduate.
“I love the fact that we can come in and answer all their questions and make them smile, you know what I mean? Tell them how they can brush their teeth, where they can brush their teeth. I just love helping people,” Student Keshia Cole said.
Keshia Cole is a second-year Dental Hygiene student. She says this event is a dream come true.
“I get to see people smile, help them smile. A lot of people don’t know that it’s health. It’s their life,” Cole said.
Give Kids a Smile is from 1 to 7 p.m. on Monday, February 17 at Fortis Institute in Scranton. There are still appointments available. To sign up, call 570-955-4105.
