Local musician teaches kids to make their own drums at Nature At The Confluence

SOUTH BELOIT, Ill. (WIFR) – Local musician David Stocker taught several kids and their families the history of drums and its healing power.

It took place at Nature at the Confluence.

Kids built a functional and a simple drum by cutting pieces of scotch tape to mimic the skin of the instrument and used wood pieces cut to length to make the structure of their drums.

Stocker said the turnout Saturday exceeded his expectations and that there is a beauty in making instruments you can find.

“That’s the first tradition. finding a hollow log, a piece of bamboo or a reed that buzzed in the wind. we connect with every drum maker there’s ever been. when we make it ourselves, we discover the sound. it’s like we join the path to discovery,” said Stocker.
