61st Daryl Starbird Car Show comes to Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. — The 61st Darryl Starbird National Rod and Custom Show is in Tulsa with a display of over 1,000 cars.

“This is the 61st Annual Darryl Starbird’s National Rod and Custom Show: The Next Generation,” said show promoter Brice Bledsoe. “It’s a family friendly event we’ve been doing in town here for a little while. Got a bunch of cars, we got action arena activities going on downstairs like live action hooning, burnouts, flamethrowers. We’ve got a demolition derby going on. There’s a little bit of something for everybody out here and so far so good. It seems like it’s been a good crowd here on Saturday.”

Bledsoe explained this car show is a true passion, not just for him, but for his entire family.

“My grandfather has been promoting car shows for nearly 70 years and then about 11 years ago or so, he finally said, ‘hey you know, I’ve done this long enough. Maybe it’s time for my kids to take a crack at it.’ So my mom Cristy and my Uncle Cliff, obviously Daryl’s kids, picked up the reins and have been running with it for about the last 11 years and you know, I get involved and help out as well also. It’s definitely a family business, family event, and we’re just excited to be back here in Tulsa putting this on for everybody.”

For anyone who wasn’t able to make it to the car show on Saturday, Bledsoe shared there’s a lot to look forward to on Sunday.

“On Sunday, we’re going to crown our Go For The Gold winner. Last night on Friday, we actually trimmed it down to the Fine Nine and then on Sunday we’re going to crown our $10,000 cash prize winner. It’s one of the most prestigious awards on the car show circuit that goes to the best creative custom on site here and we had about 20 cars in the running and then the judges will pick from the nine to see who takes home the Go For The Gold award.”

Besides the awards ceremony, there are multiple special collections and cars on display for guests to view.

“On top of that, behind me is The Illusion, which was a Pacer once upon a time. I think only Darryl and Cliff Starbird could make a Pacer look as beautiful as this one does, so we’re actually celebrating the 50th anniversary of the AMC Pacer, which is also in the middle here next to our Legends Tribute section…We’re having a really cool tribute to somebody named Jack Walker who was a really, really big part of the car show scene and unfortunately we lost him just a few years ago, so we’re doing it in his honor this year.”

The Starbird Car Show will be open on Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
