BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX)- — Two brothers in Bentley and Kadar Waller display their talents both on and off the court. Both currently play basketball at Cal State University Bakersfield (CSUB), a while maintaining their business called Bentley Bowls, a soul food cart. The idea of a soul food truck came during the pandemic. Both Bentley and Kadar Waller used some of their free time cooking up recipes in the kitchen
“Our grandparents, my aunt, she’s like a professional chef,” Bentley Waller said. “She’s big on soul food and taught us how to get down in the kitchen.”
With the nod from family members, they knew they struck gold with a business idea, and thus, Bentley Bowl was born.
“As time moved on, we knew we wanted to have a food truck and it became realistic so, we just made it happen,” Kadar Waller said. “We developed a plan and we’re going by that day by day.”
However, owning a business while maintaining your life as a student athlete can present some challenges.
“It’s challenging at times, nothing is easy, especially when you work for something and want to build it up from the ground,” Kadar Waller said. “You need a good team; we developed a great team in Bentley bowl. They help us every day and we’re here when we can be, when our schedule allows it, and we find gaps. We have priorities with school and basketball and business as well.”
However, seeing the satisfaction on customers face, makes it all worth while.
“I think there’s definitely a shortage in Bakersfield, we can definitely have more of it,” customer Rebecca Esparza said. “Anytime there is something soul food derived like Louisianan-style, I’m always excited to go try it out.”
“It means a lot to us just being booked every day,” Bentley Waller said. “Every single event, we’re nearly sold out too. That means a lot, having the community showing love to us.”
