REDDING, Calif. — A Redding mother was arrested Thursday after her 18-year-old son texted 911 to report his mom was driving under the influence with him and his younger siblings in the car, according to the Redding Police Department (RPD).
RPD said they received the report around 3 p.m. after Darlene Steiger, 43, picked up her children, ages 18, 13 and 11, from school.
Redding Police located Steiger’s vehicle at the intersection of Churn Creek Road and E. Cypress Avenue. They said that despite attempts to stop her, Steiger failed to pull over, prompting a chase. Officers deployed a device that deflated the car’s right rear tire, but she continued driving until she got to a family member’s home on Phobos Court, police said,
Steiger then got out of the car and fled on foot, leaving her children behind. She was arrested as she attempted to enter the residence’s side yard.
RPD said her blood alcohol content was over three times the legal limit of 0.08%. Her children were unharmed and released to a family member, police said.
Steiger was booked into Shasta County Jail on charges of DUI, child endangerment, evading a peace officer, and resisting arrest.
