Multi-County Community Service Agency holds their 3rd annual Black History Month forum

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) –

On Thursday, the Multi-County Community Service Agency held their third annual Black History Month forum to teach kids in the community about black history from across the nation and within their own community.

The children got to hear from local resident Daisy Edwards about her uncle’s drug store in Meridian during the 1960’s, and about her experience here during the Freedom Summer of 1964. They then asked her questions about her life and time in Meridian. They also learned about important historical black figures such as Harriet Tubman and W. E. B. Du Bois.

“Certainly, we are teaching them about African American history. We are teaching them about the origins of song, be it lift every voice and sing or weigh it in the water or go down Moses. Also, the importance of knowing where they come from, as well as where we are today,” said Ron Collier, the executive director at the Multi-County Community Service Agency.

The children played games like who am I, sung songs related to black history, and dancers from Crestwood Elementary School praise dance team performed.

“And this is of course the third year, it’s to be an inspiration in the community. Although we help a lot of people in our counties, we also know that the beginning of trying to change poverty and the poverty level is working with the children and giving them insight and hope,” said Collier.
