Culinary students participate in ‘Food Truck Wars’ at Sioux City Career Academy

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – They’ve been all the craze in the food industry for chefs and customers alike and Thursday, high school culinary students had their chance to create their ideal food truck.

Culinary Arts students in Sioux City’s Career Academy’s Pro-State class participated in the “Food Truck Wars.” Students were tasked with creating a food truck concept, complete with a business plan and menu.

Students and others were able to visit each food truck concept and taste the menu, making purchases with fake money. Culinary students say this class brings both the food and business aspects of the industry to life.

“You get to take all of that from the outside business and put it in a condensed classroom space and I feel like that is very beneficial for a person because if they want to go out and make their own companies for food, this is a great way to get started with concepting and putting your plans into actions and putting it in a competitive market,” said senior student, Owen Bostinelos.

Tyson Sanchez, the owner of one of Sioux City’s most popular food trucks, was on hand to help mentor the students. The Sioux City alum told KTIV that helping these students learn about the food truck business has been a great way to give back to young entrepreneurs.

“I just understand that anything great doesn’t come easy and if you really want to do something and make some big things happen, just trust in yourself, believe in yourself and know that as long as you keep taking it step by step and day by day, that you will get to where you want to go and that it just takes hard work, especially as a small business owner,” said Sanchez.

While there was a winner at the end of the day, the prize was bragging rights.
