Upcoming UNFI closure to affect Community Harvest Food Bank

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – United Natural Foods Inc.‘s (UNFI) Fort Wayne distribution center is closing Friday, affect the amount of food Community Harvest Food Bank will have.

Adam Roby, Community Harvest Food Bank’s Engagement Manager, says UNFI have been quite generous in their donations to the organization.

“Roughly about 8-10 % of the donations we received last year came from UNFI and went to our community-covered food pantry, so that will be a noticeable loss into the future as we go,” says Roby.

He says UNFI will continue to donate food throughout the remainder of the month.

Roby says a huge part of being able to maintain its operations is due to the community support.

“The community responds very well, they come to us and support us when we need it, and we are always very grateful for that. It’s always really invigorating to see what the community does,” says Roby.

He says this isn’t the first challenge the organization has been faced, and it probably won’t be the last.

“We’ve weathered a lot of storms you know. We’ve taken a lot of punches over the last 40 years as an organization, so this is another one of those where we see it, we see it as a challenge to overcome,” says Roby.
