Walla Walla unified basketball helps kids with disabilities

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – As varsity high school basketball teams gear up for district playoffs, another basketball season has just concluded, leaving a significant impact on the community.

Unified basketball at Walla Walla high school offers a unique and inclusive experience for kids with disabilities. The program pairs these kids with peer mentors to enjoy the game of basketball together. The atmosphere at these games is lively, with a rowdy student section, flashy introductions, cheerleaders, and even halftime performances. However, what sets these games apart is the shared postgame pizza party and the invaluable growth opportunities for the participants.

Jasmin Noland shared her experience, saying, “It’s kind of difficult. But at the same time, I had to learn everything, like basketball and everything I have. I have learned everything. It’s been helping me really well.”

Eduardo Contreras Carbajal also expressed his enjoyment, stating, “Helping me have fun… By making new friends a lot. This program year.”

Carson Casey emphasized the importance of social skills and teamwork developed through the program. “It really helps develop those social skills I think is the biggest part in that teamwork,” he said.

Jake Humphreys added, “Team building, you know, just got to get them, you know, doing something different, something a little more fun.”

Unified basketball not only provides an opportunity for kids with disabilities to play basketball but also creates lasting memories. Participants like Carbajal find joy in helping their team and making new friends. “I got to meet new people, new teammates, and I like to travel with them to spend some time, you know, making buckets too,” he said.

The season wrapped up with a special senior night at Walla Walla, celebrating all the players in their final home game. The focus remains on creating lasting memories and fostering an inclusive community through basketball.
