SAFETY DESK: Experts share tips for kids to stay safe online

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) — Online gaming can be fun and educational, but it can also be a source of stress for parents.

Experts from Roblox said there are some things you can do before your kid gets online to keep them safe.

According to the Pew Research Center, 80% of teens say that harassment while playing video games is an issue for their peers. 41% say they’ve been called an offensive name themselves while gaming.

February 11 is Safer Internet Day. According to ConnectSafely, the day was formed to create a safer internet where people use technology responsibly.

Roblox Senior Director Of Product Policy Eliza Jacobs said when it comes to parents starting a conversation with their kids about online safety, they should focus on a few things.

One idea is to play and explore the game your kid is playing yourself. Jacobs said showing a genuine interest in their interests can get the ball rolling for a conversation on safety.

“If you start with a positive conversation, then, if you have any negative experiences, they’ll feel much more open to come to you and talk to you about it,” Jacobs said. “You’ve reassured them that they’re not going to get in trouble and their privileges are not going to get taken away and that you really just want to hear about their experience.”

At the end of 2024, Roblox itself rolled out some new features on the app that are aimed at keeping it’s younger players safe. This includes parents having access to their kid’s controls and specific content limitations.
