Fortnite is getting gritty with its Chapter 6, season 2 season, which moves away from the Japanese-inspired Chapter 6 season 1 and heads to what seems to be at least somewhat familiar territory.
Epic has just announced “Lawless,” with a brief teaser for Chapter 6, season 2, with an incredibly short video giving a general sense of the theme and at least one location, “Crime City, where the hustle never stops.” The season will release on February 21, 2025.
The city looks a bit like Gotham, minus Batman (well, who knows, knowing Fortnite), and the tagline is “Dill with it” with a mugshot of what appears to be a rapper that’s a pickle. But more pressingly, above that, we have a wanted poster for a thug version of Midas, who will return to the game, probably in the battle pass.
There are gold bars littering the street, seemingly confirming rumors that this is going to be another heist season, which some players are not thrilled about, given that we’ve already had one (or two). My sense of this, however, is that this is not trying to be a “slick” style heist like we’ve seen in the past, but more Grand Theft Auto 3. I just had a thought about whether Fortnite could actually land a crossover with GTA, bringing in characters from that series, Tommy Vercetti, CJ, Michael, Franklin, Trevor, etc.
GTA 5
Rockstar
Sound crazy? I don’t think so. Fortnite has already gotten IP from a huge number of some of the biggest game franchises in the world, short of places like Nintendo who are never going to let this happen. But Rockstar and GTA? I think they would, especially with GTA 6 coming out later this year, supposedly. No, I don’t think we’d get Jason and Lucia skins, the protagonists of that game, however. Well, at least not until the game comes out. I wouldn’t say no to more Night City-based Cyberpunk skins either. Maybe some Batman villains we don’t have yet, who knows.
Despite being about thievery to some degree, I do think this is likely to have a much different vibe than past seasons, and is trying to do an entirely new, gritty, street-level aesthetic instead of what we’ve already gotten. Whether players like that or not remains to be seen (many seem skeptical at present), but it really does have me wondering what collab skins are going to result from the concept, GTA or otherwise.
