MONROE— Food lovers are being served more content with a podcast from Monroe resident Joel Williamson. “Dinner Rolls” will highlight local foods, from restaurants to bakeries and more. It’s one of the programs set to premier on the new local on-demand streaming network Bchira, which is being launched by Fallon Trujillo. Bchira has several programs featuring local people and businesses.
Williamson’s idea for “Dinner Rolls” came when he started the Facebook page Living Local Monroe and found the posts that received the most engagement were the ones about food, whether he was highlighting a new business or posting a photo of what he was eating.
“Everybody seemed to love that, and they were engaged with it and I’m like, ‘There’s clearly a desire for something more here,’” he said.
Williamson believes this level of engagement comes from food’s ability to build community through conversation, whether that be over a meal or about the food itself.
“When you share a table with somebody you’re sharing an experience, you’re kind of setting aside time to get to know the person where there’s going to be conversation,” he said.
The podcast will bring on a different guest for each episode, from restauranteurs to food truck owners to just local food lovers. So far, the lineup of planned guests includes the owner of Atwater Street Tacos, the owner of Michigan Wine and Beer Portal, and a barbecue food lover.
The first eight episodes of the podcast will be recorded in a studio Williamson built in downtown Monroe. They are set to be broadcast on Bchira. Trujillo believed that Williamson had a good eye for seeing craft in the community.
“So, when he had the idea to do a restaurant podcast about the local businesses, it was such a great idea and I immediately was drawn to it and how it would help the other business owners and people in the community to get to know the different restaurants and businesses here,” Trujillo said.
