N.J. school districts can’t enact controversial new policies about transgender kids — for now, court says

Three Monmouth County school boards that passed new policies affecting transgender students are still barred from enacting the new rules, but they can consider alternative policies, an appeals court said in a decision released Monday.

The Appellate Division’s decision — which involves the Middletown, Manalapan-Englishtown and Marlboro school districts — agreed with the Monmouth County Superior Court’s earlier ruling that temporarily prevented the districts from changing their policies while the matter is decided by the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights.

The three school districts want to amend their transgender policies to require school staff to notify parents when students want to change their gender identity at school.
