KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Western Michigan University students have been holding an initiative called ‘Feeding Broncos,’ which aims at eliminating food insecurity among college students.
Feeding Broncos, part of the now student registered organization Broncos Kitchen, serves two hot meals a week on Mondays and Thursdays to all students, free of charge.
The meals are served in the Dialog Room at the Kanley Memorial Chapel in the heart of campus.
Feeding Broncos president Courtney Hubert-Tortorelli told News Channel 3 they see up to 125 students per serving day.
“We just want everybody to get a meal,” Hubert-Tortorelli said. “Students who are fed are more focused, they perform better. “Two hot meals a week that are free to all students with an ID, that’s just really where we wanted to start and end up.”
The initiative also has membership opportunities for those who would like to support it financially.
Membership levels range from $20-$30, and students who buy one receive a t-shirt, sweatshirt, or hoodie depending on which level they buy.
Broncos Kitchen also has a GoFundMe, looking to raise money in hopes of expanding its capacities.
WMU freshmen like Katrina Gardner and Madison Greenhalgh work minimum wage jobs and struggle to buy groceries.
“It’s like, ‘Oh, I can’t go grocery shopping this week because I have to pay these bills,’” Gardner said.
Both Gardner and Greenhalgh are open to visiting Feeding Broncos after learning about its convenience.
“We don’t know when we’re going to be able to eat next, and being able to know that that’s still there as an option if we run out of meal swipes is just very helpful for us to be able to go and eat something,” Greenhalgh said.
