GENEVA — One of the city’s most popular summer events for more than 20 years has come to an end.
The Geneva Business Improvement District announced it will no longer host the downtown car show Cruisin’ Night and Block Party, which took place each July. It will be replaced with a streamlined event called Wheels in Geneva, which will be held in the Seneca Street parking lot in September.
BID cited rising costs and ongoing security concerns in its decision to end Cruisin’ Night, which also featured live music.
“As we continue to evaluate the evolving needs and challenges within our community, it has become clear that some events must adapt or come to an end,” BID Director Catherine Price said. “While we bid farewell to Cruisin’ Night, we are excited to usher in a new chapter focused exclusively on celebrating automotive culture.”
BID said Wheels in Geneva will be led by Patrick O’Connor, who has consulted on Cruisin’ Night for the past three years. It will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 14 rather than the traditional evening format on the last weekend in July.
BID said O’Connor is an organizer for many car shows in the area, including Wheels on the Seneca: Veteran’s Benefit, Oaks Corners Fire Department, and Seneca Falls Car Show.
“We realize that the date change will be an adjustment, but as we looked at available days, we didn’t want to conflict with other area shows,” O’Connor said. “In addition, the weather will be much nicer for an asphalt day show in September.”
There will be a limited number of vendors and no live music, O’Connor said, adding that the emphasis will be on the classic cars that were the heart of Cruisin’ Night.
“Our goal now is to rebuild from the ground up with a singular focus on the car show,” O’Connor explained.
Price said BID “will be creating opportunities for the downtown businesses to participate in this event.”
BID will be releasing information for how car owners can register for Wheels in Geneva at a later date.
