WELLSBURG — Brooke High School will be playing baseball on an all-turf surface this spring, according to Assistant Superintendent of Schools Corey Murphy.
“We are looking at an April completion date,” Murphy said in a telephone call Monday afternoon. “We might have to move a few of our early home games, but we are planning on playing on the new surface this season.”
Funding for the $2 million project was authorized during a July meeting of the Brooke County Board of Education. The funds are a result of the sale of several closed buildings within the district, and also included a new softball field, as well.
However, the softball field will have to be relocated due to constant flooding at its current site.
“We have put that on hold for now and are looking at a new softball field for the 2026 season,” Murphy said. A new site has not yet been determined, according to Murphy.
According to reports, the most recent flooding from a nearby creek had the softball field’s concession stand and restrooms nearly under water.
The baseball field, meanwhile, is getting an entire new surface as Field Turf, of Pittsburgh, is busy performing the work.
A total of three inches of dirt has been removed from the original field and work is progressing.
“It’s going to be beautiful,” Brooke head baseball coach Doug Costain said. “The warning track is going to be green-and-gold checkered just like the end zones on the football field. The Bruin logo in centerfield is huge.”
In addition to the all-turf surface, the dugouts will be a little wider and the press box and concession stand will be totally re-done, as will bleacher seating.
The plans also call for a bullpen and batting cage along the outside of the right field and left field lines. Those will also be all-turf.
The Bruins are scheduled to open the season on March 22 at home against Elkins.
Other home games that first week are with Wheeling Park (April 1), Harrison Central (April 2), Indian Creek (April 4) and St. Clairsville (April 5).
