Superbowl Sunday is known for deep fried food, and local Sports bars, but for one Church in New Bern, it is also a time of giving.
while many will spend today throwing around a football, here in New Bern the kids of First Baptist Church spent their Super Bowl Sunday morning with something a little more important.
The kids have been so excited, each Wednesday and Sunday when they come, they have just brought bags and bags.
New Bern’s First Baptist Church held a Super Bowl food drive in support of Religious Community Services (RCS), and children’s director Sheree Bagley coordinated the drive.
Times are tough, and everyone needs help every now and then. And it’s just—we were being the hands and feet of Jesus just to help them be able to extend that out to the community.
They collected items like peanut butter, granola bars, and so much more.
Bagley says that by tying the drive to something like the Superbowl, it can help motivate kids to get involved.
They are all very sports orientated, and so I just thought it would be a great idea for a couple weeks to pull that together.
Providing a path to help more as they get older.
Starts with teaching our children to have empathy for others and to be helpful and kind to others.
The drive started back in January and Sunday they loaded up all the donations to take to RCS, and celebrated the successful drive.
Everyone wore their favorite team, jerseys or attire today, we had cupcakes, football giveaways. It was just a fun morning to celebrate the success that they did in bringing all of their food.
For these kids, spending the the morning collecting donations for their community made them feel like they scored a touchdown.
