Medical Monday: Kids heart health concerns with vaping

(WXOW) – In this second week of heart month, our Medical Monday focuses on heart health when it comes to kids–in particular, the effects vaping can have.

While the latest survey from federal health officials show e-cigarette and vape use among children is down slightly from 2023 to 2024, the prevalence of the products still pose a major concern.

An expert with Emplify by Gundersen said we already know that vaping can have big health impacts down the road as some of the chemicals in the devices are known to carry the highest risks for heart disease and cancer. She added, however, the unknowns of the devices could be even more troubling.

“The transparency of what’s in them is not very consistent,” said Andrea Winters, a physicians assistant. “For instance, some of them will say that there’s 0% nicotine and when they’ve been tested, there actually is levels of nicotine in those. So I think the unknowns are almost as scary as what we already know, which is quite disturbing.”

Winters said it’s also important for parents to not only talk with their kids about the dangers of vaping but also to model healthy behavior by not using e-cigarettes in front of kids, as well as working to eat healthy and stay active.
