The Super Bowl is not just about football.
It’s perhaps the secret as to why the NFL’s biggest game today enjoys unquestioned status as the most-watched event in the United States each year. The football at Super Bowl 59 on Sunday, when the Kansas City Chiefs face the Philadelphia Eagles, is merely the main course on a menu of items that bring fans together.
It’s the news conferences, sponsor’s events, concerts and celebrity sightings generating hype throughout Super Bowl week. It’s the Super Bowl commercials that now include their own promotional build-up. It’s the Super Bowl halftime show, featuring Kendrick Lamar this year. It’s the Super Bowl parties, held in houses and sports bars across the country. It’s the increasingly rare sense that most of the country is watching the same thing together.
And when people gather, they often share a meal. The Super Bowl, in addition to everything else, is no different. It’s an event built around food for everyone but the players playing in the game. Everyone else is watching football for more than three hours Sunday, and everyone is going to get hungry eventually.
Over seven decades of Super Bowls, familiar favorites have emerged and this will be an unofficial (and very subjective) ranking for an unofficial holiday on the American calendar. What are the best Super Bowl foods to eat this year when the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs play? Here’s one football fan’s opinion:

Ranking the best Super Bowl foods
The closest thing to a vegetable on this list is a jalapeno.
10. Soft pretzels
Folks love a soft pretzel in the stands and it’s no different watching from home. Finding something bite-size, with a variety of mustards for dipping, is always a hit at a Super Bowl party.
9. Sliders
A full-size hamburger is usually too much with so many other choices on Super Bowl Sunday. Something savory on a Hawaiian roll is just right. Philly cheesesteak and Kansas City bbq sliders are in order this year.
8. Charcuterie board
Homemade charcuterie boards have grown in popularity in recent years and offer the opportunity to give non-meat eaters an alternative at your Super Bowl party. A variety of meats, cheeses, olives, nuts, crackers and other twists on bar snacks are often a big hit.
7. Nachos
Not to be confused with chips and salsa, or chips and guacamole, or chips and dip (more on that in a moment). Nachos often have all of those things melded together and should include a protein for optimal taste. This snack would be higher on the list if it weren’t so messy to grab off the plate or if there were a better way to keep melted cheese warm throughout the game.
6. Chili
Chili is another alternative to satisfy everyone, with turkey and vegetarian chili options available. Extra points because it’s easy to serve.
5. Potato Skins
French fries are the finger food side for every other day on the sports calendar. Potato skins are heartier and have a better shape for a “loaded” option akin to a mini baked potato.
4. Pigs in a blanket
Hot dogs are a staple of any American sporting event and pigs in a blanket should be a staple of any Super Bowl party. It’s hard to beat this finger food when it comes to taste and practicality.
3. Chips and dip
This may seem generic, but it’s highly-ranked because of the variety of dips available on Super Bowl Sunday. Buffalo chicken dip (the most popular Super Bowl dish in multiple states), 7-layer dip, spinach artichoke dip and even queso fits in this category.
2. Pizza
A boring choice, perhaps, but most people watching the Super Bowl are going to have pizza. So don’t complicate a tried-and-true favorite. Kids and adults love pizza. It’s simple to pick up and hold while standing or sitting at the party. It’s also easy to warm up in the oven during the second half.
1. Wings
Whether your flavor buffalo, or barbeque, or dry rub, or one of the many exotic sauces available these days, nothing beats a good chicken wing on Super Bowl Sunday. Yes, they can be a little messy. But it’s still the most popular Super Bowl snack in the country. The National Chicken Council estimates that Americans will consume 1.47 billion wings Sunday.
