Working towards earning their Junior Ranger badges: Kids participate in City of Reno Junior Ranger Program

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – The City of Reno hosted their Junior Ranger Program event at Mira Loma Park Feb. 8.

Kids can become Junior rangers by earning six stickers, which they receive at the end of each event, to put in their Junior Ranger Guidebook.

Once participants complete six activities and collect six stickers, there is a swearing-in ceremony in January 2026 where they will be given their official Junior Ranger Badge.

20 kids participated in the bike maintenance and safety activity, where the Kiwanis club also helped kiddos learn about the mechanism in their bikes, and how to take care of them.

“Before the students learned about bike safety and went through the bike rodeo, their bikes were checked for safety. They checked air pressure and tires, chain tension, brake adjustments, general bike fit to make sure that all the kids were able to participate,” says Park Ranger Mike Willyoung.

Willyoung says that the goal of the program is to inspire residents to explore the outdoor recreation areas in Reno.

“The name of the game with our program is to teach stewardship to the little ones and to people of all ages. The Truckee River is of course one of our region’s greatest resources and we’d really like to communicate the importance of stewardship and caring for that space.,” says Willyoung.

There are 12 events scheduled for this year, with 2 in each ward of the city. They are free and open to anyone who wants to participate.

The next event is disc golf on March 15 at Mayors Park.
