LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – For many children, having their own bed is a significant milestone, representing independence and a dedicated space for rest and growth. However, not all children, particularly those in poverty, have access to that.
Through Metro United Way’s “Build-A-Bed” initiative, 175 beds and hygiene kits have been given out to children in Southern Indiana, bringing the total number of beds distributed though the initiative to 1,128.
Metro United Way partnered with several Southern Indiana schools to identify children in need. With help from the students and faculty at Prosser Education Center they were able to make that wish come true.
Students ordered all the lumber ahead of time and measured out the specific lengths for each part of the bed. Then sanded all those pieces down in preparation for Saturday’s event.
For some, like apprentice carpenter Ian Hubbard, the event is personal.
“You don’t really know or really understand how much it would benefit you unless you’re in that situation,” Hubbard said. “I personally have had family that I know haven’t really had a bed to sleep on and it just feels awesome to give back to people that are struggling.”
The beds were loaded up in trucks immediately after the event ended and distributed to the families.
Kids who get the beds are also getting basic hygiene kits and bedding items, including bed frames, mattresses, sheets, blankets, pillows, and laundry bags.
