Patrick Mahomes and wife Brittany have given their three kids unusual names

Patrick Mahomes and his wife Brittany recently welcomed their third child and they followed the family tradition by giving the baby an unusual name.

Mahomes is hoping to lead the Kansas City Chiefs to Super Bowl glory this weekend, with the reigning champions going up against the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL’s showpiece event.

If they are victorious, they will become the first team to three-peat the Super Bowl and Mahomes will be crucial to their hopes of making history.

The 29-year-old recently became a dad-of-three, with his youngest daughter coming into the world last month. All of his children have unusual names, which seem to follow a unique medal-themed tradition.

His eldest daughter is named Sterling, which hints at silver, followed by their son Bronze. His youngest daughter is called Golden, with Brittany revealing the name on Instagram shortly after she was born.

The logic behind the children’s names was explained by Brittany during a Q&A in 2023. She said: “I named my dog Steel in college and we were going to name our second dog Sterling to match Steel.

“But then I decided that Sterling would make a great name for my daughter instead. Jackson [Mahomes, brother of Patrick] is the one who suggested Bronze. He said it would fit perfectly with Sterling.”

It remains to be seen if any of Mahomes’ three children will follow in his footsteps by taking up sport when they are older. He has already made it clear that he will not be pushy, though, with the Chiefs quarterback willing to let them lead their own lives.

During an episode of Football In America in 2022, he said: “I’m going to teach my son and my daughter all the fundamentals and whatever they want to learn, but at the same time, I want to let it be about them.

“That’s what my dad did growing up, that’s what my parents did. They didn’t pressure me to do anything. I think that’s why I’m in the position I am today.”

Mahomes spoke about the joys of fatherhood during the build-up to the Super Bowl earlier this week, claiming that he ‘can’t have a bad day’ when he comes home to his three children.

“I think more than anything it gives me that perspective on life,” he explained. “I might have bad days, but I go home and see that smile on that face. You can’t have a bad day because you know you’re a father at the end of the day.”
