RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – A Native American-owned restaurant is now open in downtown Rapid City.
The Hangry Buffalo is a food truck that opened in 2021 and has now transitioned into a restaurant.
However, the story starts even earlier.
“We started cooking with members of the community to provide for the Indigenous relatives that maybe didn’t have food or ways to get food because of the pandemic,” Sophia Cordero, co-owner of The Hangry Buffalo, said.
Now, the owners are operating both businesses throughout the week.
The Hangry Buffalo restaurant is open in downtown Rapid City at 523 Main Street, Monday through Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and is in a shared space of Diamond E Collective.
“They wanted The Hangry Buffalo, since we serve bison, to start incorporating their bison, farm to fresh foods since we were already kind of going that route, the healthier route,” Sophia said.
As for the food truck, Sophia says, “You can find us at The Flying J until April; Thursday, Friday, Saturdays noon till midnight or sold out.”
Although one is a food truck and the other is a brick-and-mortar, they both serve the same food but stay tuned for some new options to the restaurant.
“We get to incorporate new options that maybe the community or our food truck Hangry’s haven’t had the opportunity to try,” Sophia said.
For example, co-owner Anthony Cordero says this summer the restaurant will be “incorporating fish to our menu,” which will be flown in from Alaska.
You can find Mexican dishes also.
“We serve tacos, burritos and a big burrito called the B-21. Kind of a mixture of her mother’s cooking and my grandmother’s cooking,” Anthony said.
The food, especially the B-21 Hangry burrito, gets high marks from customers.
“They said it was the biggest burrito in town,” a customer said.
In addition to the food truck and brick-and-mortar, the Cordero’s own a catering company. Their daughter also owns her own business called The Little Buffalo Charcuterie and Sweets.
