Yes, that’s from “Finding Nemo.”
SUNDAY PUZZLE —Hi solvers! Writing a Sunday crossword puzzle is so familiar and comforting. I don’t know about you, but the consistency of being able to sit down on the weekend and know a crossword is awaiting me is something that can often keep me grounded, give me a much needed break or inspire me to get back into a routine. Recently, they’ve been a great distraction and a great source of relief. Crosswords also gave me a community, both here at The Michigan Daily and back home with my family, those puzzle-loving fiends. Every time someone mentions they took the time to fill out a crossword of mine, I always feel so honored and touched that someone devoted a piece of their day to something I created. Thank you for being a part of that. If you have any specific comments about this puzzle, you can reach me at [email protected]. For general questions and concerns, reach out to [email protected]. Happy solving!
Tricky Clues:
5A. This one was pretty straight forward, but the answer “Official procedure” is PROTOCOL. I recently started working in a lab, so to me, protocol has taken on a whole new meaning. Call me a STEM girl all you want, but I feel like I have a million new best friends in the little clumps of bacteria I work with. No, it’s not weird at all!
65A. Look. I didn’t want to include this, but it just happened to fit. The answer to “University of Michigan rival” is unfortunately OHIO STATE, the College Football Playoff National Champion that still can’t beat their unranked rival. At the time I’m writing this, it’s been 1,891 days since the Buckeyes beat the Wolverines. Go blue.
68A. “Family man” is quite literally DAD! It’s my Dad’s birthday Feb. 12 — everyone say it with me on the count of three… one, two, three, “Happy birthday Marissa’s dad!”
55D. The “Orphan in Byron’s ‘Don Juan’” is LEILA. I’ve personally never read “Don Juan,” or any of Lord Byron’s work, but this is the most famous Leila I could think of. Sorry solvers, hopefully you learned something about 19th century literature!
64D. “Over text, ‘Congrats on getting older!’” is actually HBD, which is slang for, “Happy birthday!” It’s a pretty important person’s birthday soon, if you check out 68-Across …
Today’s Theme:
Today’s theme is actually a more physical, grid-related play on words than I normally write! Hopefully you caught on to the fact that 4-Across, 41-Down, 67-Across and 15-Down contain the letters “POD” in PODCAST, PODIUM, TIDE POD and TRIPOD. The pods surround two tiny entries at the center, 33-Down and 37-Across, which are both PEA! If you notice, this means there are two PEAs in a POD. To be honest, I have way more pea friends than I can fit in a single pod, and I love them all dearly. My support system is awesome, guys.
