BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Feeding veterans was the order of the day in Bowling Green.
Marine veteran Bob Wilson, nicknamed “Gunny,” served 20 years in the Marines and seven in the National Guard.
Wilson said, “I’ve been to Iraq and Afghanistan in uniform. I’ve been to Iraq and Afghanistan and 17 other countries as a contractor for the Army.”
He and the Kentucky Veterans Brigade helped veterans by giving them bags of food to thank them for their service.
Wilson said, “It’s a variety, it’s all gonna be non-perishable. We got dry goods, like mac and cheese, ramen, canned goods. One of our favorites is canned meat.”
Food drives for veterans are essential right now. According to Feed America, 1 in 9 working wage veterans are food insecure. Additionally, 1.2 million low-income veterans use Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, formerly known as food stamps.
Wilson said, “A lot of veterans, when they come back from serving or whatever, a lot is taken from them. When we get out, we want to give back.”
Creating even more of an incentive to help those who gave everything to our nation and our people.
Wayne Boyd, a volunteer, said, “It feels great. The world needs to be a batter place. Give back.”
Wilson said, “We want to help, and that’s the bottom line.”
The food drive will be open through Saturday, Feb. 8 at 8:00 p.m. central time.
