OGDEN — Scouts are getting ready to help the community one can at a time.
On Saturday, scouts with Scouting America’s Crossroads of the West Council will host the 39th annual “Scouting for Food” event.
Scouts will be at Smith’s locations across the state to help collect food and donations from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. That food will then be sent to local food pantries and food banks.
“I love helping people. I’ve always loved serving people in any way that I can,” said Isaac Brower, a scout.
Brower said his favorite part of the day is when he can suit up in uniform and make a positive difference in others’ lives.
“Doing this, especially where we’re able to take the food and take things that we’ve done — we’ve collected from people — and give it to the people that would otherwise not be able to get their own food: It’s just amazing to me,” Brower said.
Alan Endicott, a scout executive and active scout for nearly 30 years, said “Scouting for Food” comes especially in good timing, as Saturday marks the 115th anniversary of scouting.
“We have been doing ‘Scouting for Food’ for over 35 years in our council. It is a tremendous opportunity to make what we call a big difference in the lives of so many other people,” Endicott said.
Endicott said in most cases, people can drop off food or donations to any local Smith’s store.
Teaming up with the Utah National Guard, Endicott said this is special in helping our neighbors in need directly.
“It helps out people where they need it, and helps out the food banks that actually know who they need to help and support,” Endicott said.
Last year, Endicott said they collected around 150,000 pounds of food. This year, they hope to beat that and continue the tradition of what it means to serve others through scouting.
“It’s really a win-win all the way around,” Endicott said.
“It’s taught me life skills that I’ll use throughout my whole life,” Brower said.
The Utah Food Bank President and CEO said the amount of food raised has the potential to feed families for extended periods of time.
