Montana leaders push for rodeo as official state sport

Montana’s congressional delegation is pushing for rodeo to be named the official state sport, highlighting its deep cultural and historical roots.

MONTANA – Montana’s congressional delegation is advocating for rodeo to be recognized as the official state sport.

U.S. Senator Steve Daines, Senator Tim Sheehy, Congressman Ryan Zinke, and Congressman Troy Downing are calling on the state legislature to make this designation. They emphasize the cultural and historical significance of rodeo for Montanans.

“For generations, Montanan ranchers have relied on roping and steering skills to drive cattle. Today, Montanans continue this tradition on ranches, local rodeos, and in professional arenas. Rodeo displays the horsemanship inherent to our Montana way of life and celebrates our rich outdoor heritage,” the letter from the delegation states in part.

Several other states have already recognized rodeo as their official sport, including South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming. In contrast, North Dakota recognizes curling, and Washington has chosen pickleball, which was first invented on Bainbridge Island.

Visit Southeast Montana notes that rodeo has deep roots in the region, dating back to the late 19th century. The first official rodeo in Montana is believed to have taken place in Miles City in 1914. Miles City, along with the rest of the state, continues to actively participate in rodeos throughout the spring and summer seasons.
