MORGANTOWN, W.Va (WDTV) – Free smiles were on the market in Monongalia County Friday.
Over 20 patients who are 18 years and younger without dental insurance received a free dentist appointment during Give Kids A Smile event at the Mon County Health Department.
The 15th annual event was held as part of the ADA’s National Children’s World Health Month.
Dental hygienists gave checkups, cleaning and fluoride treatments, and even offered restorative work to the children patients.
Dr. Youseph Kassar said it’s key for kids to understand the importance of dental hygiene early in life.
“Showing the importance of oral health is something we should instill in our children,” Kassar said. “It’s a lifelong journey, even adults don’t know how important it is to take care of their mouth/overall health. Being from Morgantown, being able to give back to the community I grew up in is pretty nice.”
Shellie Hill was able to book a free appointment for her 3-year-old daughter and shares the same sentiment as Dr. Kassar.
“We noticed her teeth yesterday and happened to call this morning, luck of the draw,” Hill said. “I think it’s important to have a good relationship with a dentist, especially when kids are young, so they know how important it is to keep their mouth in good condition.”
