FLINT, MI — A little over 200 cars filled the Dort Financial Center on Friday, Feb. 7, for the 10th annual Chrome and Ice Winter Indoor Car Show.
The three-day event, running Friday through Sunday, features classic cars, motorcycles and muscle cars and is expected to draw up to 10,000 people, fitting with the theme: “Everyone Will Love.”
The show organized by Back to the Bricks brings together car enthusiasts and vendors from all over to spread their love and common passion for vehicles.
“What’s nice about a classic is when you see it, it’s like a rewind of time. Whoever owned that car, it automatically comes back to them what they did with this car […],” Tim Wascher, owner of a 1976 Monte Carlo for 25 years, said. “When they see this car, it comes right back to them as plain as day. When they speak to you, it’s like they did it yesterday.”
The motivation behind the event is to provide a car show in the middle of winter, atypical for the car show season, to provide a sense of community.
Being indoors at the Dort Financial Center also provides warmth and protection for the spectators and cars.
As an indoor event, it holds less cars than the thousands that can be found at an outdoor event, but Amber Taylor, executive director of Back to the Bricks, sees that as an educational advantage.
“Everybody has time to talk to these participants. Get the story, the generational stories, the rebuild stories, the paint jobs, the craftsmanship,” she said. “You feel like you have more time […] it does give that younger crowd that comes in more opportunity to talk with the car owner themselves.”
The car show continues on Saturday, Feb. 8 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Dort Financial Center, 3501 Lapeer Road.
An awards ceremony is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
General admission tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for ages 12-17, and are free for children 11 and under.
Parking in the lot outside the arena is $5 per vehicle.
