WB’s Promised ‘Wonder Woman’ Game Is In Deep Trouble, Says New Report

WB Games has been up and down the past few years with a massive hit in the form of Hogwarts Legacy and a massive miss in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which of course led WB leadership to conclude…the studio needs more live service games, seemingly the opposite of the lesson that should be learned.

A new report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier now goes deep into the problems at WB Games and one game in particular, an upcoming Wonder Woman game that was announced all the way back in 2021. But this new report says that despite the fact that a ton of money has been spent on it already, it’s being rebooted and now will likely not be out for several more years, which could make it almost a decade between its announcement and potential release. From the piece:

“One of the company’s biggest bets in development, a video game based on Wonder Woman, has struggled to coalesce, according to people familiar with the project. Early last year, it was rebooted and switched directors. The game has already cost more than $100 million, said the people who asked not to be identified discussing nonpublic information, and is still years away from release, if it ever makes it to market”

All of this turmoil has led to head of WB Games, David Haddad, soon stepping down from his role, which was not exactly a surprise, the report says. In addition to Suicide Squad, WB also lost a lot of money on titles like Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions and MultiVersus, the latter of which is being shut down later this year.

There’s information here that Monolith, the Wonder Woman studio previously known for the Shadow of War LOTR series, almost made a Game of Thrones game before eventually Wonder Woman was chosen, and the GoT game was cancelled.

The report says that Wonder Woman tried to tweak the Shadow of War nemesis system with her befriending former enemies, but now that’s not happening and the nemesis system may not be in the game at all, as it will be a “more traditional action-adventure game.”

Upon hearing this news I joked online that the pivot would be to becoming a live service, but thankfully that does not appear to be happening despite WB’s past statements on the concept. There are apparently a long list of potential games that have been pitched in various formats to various studios over the last few years, a Constantine game, a Joker game, a Flash game and more. Now, there’s a new Game of Thrones game in the works, but it’s unclear if that may ever actually come to life.

The end result of all this is that it’s going to be a potentially brutal few years for WB Games here. A Hogwarts Legacy sequel is still years away. A new Rocksteady Batman game after Suicide Squad is still years away. And this Wonder Woman, after this new reboot, is still years away. Any Game of Thrones title seems to be in exceptionally early stages meaning that is…still years away.

The entire piece is excellent and I highly suggest you read it in full here. Even in a tough market, the saga of WB games seems far more difficult than most, and as ever, leadership is to blame.
